Good Harvest: Modern Chinese Cuisine and Hot Pot

Not just the normal hot pot soup but so much more.

Elly and I weren’t quite sure what we were in store for when we wanted to try this place out. It’s located in the old and renovated Pho Hoa spot next to BBQ Corner at Asian Square on Buford Hwy. First impression is that the place was nicely decorated and not busy and overflowing with decors like more places that try too hard. Clean tables and open layout gave it a comfortable feel. We had a 15 minute wait the evening of July 3rd.

We were a little confused from the online menus and review sites. The mini hot pot menu with set choices are for Mon-Fri from 11-4. The normal mini hot pot selection is a la carte where you can even do a duo pot with 2 broth choices. Also available were premade soup hot pots served with cabbage and brisket, while the dry hot pots that are served with rice (that’s what we gathered so far, but haven’t tried the dry yet). It’s best to ask the helpful and friendly wait staff or manager if it’s your first time and want to get a better understanding. Or you can always message us directly for a better understanding on what we experienced.

Check out the menu and you will see a large selection of cold dishes, that consisted of pickled veggies and meats which are a perfect addition to these hot pots adding a cool and not too sour accompaniment. We didn’t get to try the wide variety of salty and savory pancakes.

Looking forward to our next visit where we can try the dry hot pots and further side dishes.

Btw, ask for a bib if you are the messy slurpy hot pot eater type, like me.

Miao Jia Sour Fish Pot – tomato based sweet sour base soup with whole white fish. The fish came straight from their love tank but I forgot to ask what kind of fish it was, possibly flounder. It came out not looking like the picture but tasted superb. We asked for them to add some beef broth to top off the pot right after we tasted the soup to try it out. Thought maybe the added broth would dilute the soup, but it did not. Gave us added broth so that we could through in all the additional mushroom and items we ordered. The fish still had skin and bones but didn’t taste scaly or fishy at all. Elly loved the head with it’s nice and meaty cheeks. The fish meat itself tasted nice, clean and full of flavor from the broth. Tried some rice with the broth and it reminded me of the Viet sour soup.

If you end up ordering the soup hot pot and not the combo meat one, it will come with cabbage and beef brisket that’s fatty and as good and better quality then we have found at all the K-BBQ we have tried.

Ordered additional items from the mini hot pot a la carte menu. Mushroom variety plate, tofu skin and fish paste. Love the variety of mushroom offered and fish paste was fluffy and light once cooked in the broth.

Cucumber and Pear fruit drink – normally would have celery but they were out. Tasted freshly made and cucumber flavor made it taste fresher. Make sure to stir it up since fruit juices tend to settle. And it wasn’t watered down from ice since none were added.

Marinated pig’s ear – best we’ve had in a while. It was thinly sliced and still very snappy and crunchy. The added vinegar type dipping sauce made the slices so much more flavorful. Next time, we’ll ask for more sauce and drench it all over the dish.

Crispy cucumber – what can I say, it’s crispy. Loaded with a light sour and garlic sauce. It was even crispy couple days later (leftovers).
